“The Dutch royals have as a "last name" of Orange and our nation was founded by William of Orange. Orange being a duchy in France at the time (1500 - 1600 or some time around that). and talking about national colours, they said why are green and gold?
Australia's national colours, are not in your flag either?
About the width of the beach; Between low and high tide there is a 2 meter difference in the water level. You can imagine how much that "eats away" the beach. In some places it sometimes makes the difference between 80 meters beach and no beach at all. You were probably at the beach at low tide. Also you mentioned the beach extending a kilometer each way. Actually it starts at Hoek van Holland and goes all the way up to den Helder (over 100 km) almost without any interruptions save one dike and a few canals giving entrance to the harbours of Scheveningen, Katwijk and Amsterdam.”
It’s interesting, as I never thought of Holland as being a nation of beaches. Somehow I imagined rocky shores and ports.
