Day 51 - De Meeshoev, Oudenbosch basilica

I felt well enough to join the ride today, and rode Ed’s electric bicycle, a Sparta Ion, and joined the others in the aproximately 25 km ride. The electric bicycle is popular here, especially with the older generation, as it means that they can be mobile for a lot longer. This bike has 3 modes, Eco, Normal and Power which gives 3 levels of assistance. With the assistance, the amount of power delivered depends on the pressure on the pedals, so if you pedal harder, it provides more assistance. The power delivery is very smooth, and feels as if someone is pushing from behind. This was especially useful after I stopped to take photos, and then had to catch up with the group.

The whole event is very social, and included stops at cafes and an asparagus farm where they grow white asparagus which is not common in Australia. They are much larger than green asparagus, and have to be peeled before use.

The finishing area is more like an afternoon party than just event administration, with a live band, beer being served and people sitting around just enjoying the afternoon sun. Our group dutifully sat and had drinks before riding the 5 km back home, ie. We rode over 35 km on the day.

That evening some friends came over for a BBQ, and we spent a pleasant evening eating, drinking and socializing.
