This was day to explore a bit more of London, so after a late leisurely breakfast at the hotel we headed off to Portobello Road on the other side of London. Portobello Road, as well as a well-known area for markets and antiques is also a major tourist magnet – it was packed.

Although quite cool and with occasional drizzling rain, there were thousands of people trooping up and down the road. There were some very good second hand record and book stores though so it wasn’t all bad.
Interestingly, there seems to be a strong market all across Europe for vinyl albums, much more than in Australia. Frances also found some nice fashions, although by now anything we acquire will be excess baggage.

We headed back to the hotel for lunch and a rest, and later, a walk around the local area. Not far away we cam across St Giles church, quite interesting, but more interesting was the music we could hear within the church. After exploring a bit, we found that there is a Friday night jazz club in the crypt. We were tempted to go in, but it was early, and apparently it doesn’t really get going till fairly late, so we gave it a miss.

So, it was the dinnertime search again, and with the light drizzle turning to heavier rain, we thought we'd try one of the few unlicenced local restaurants. We looked around for some wine. The three ‘off-licences’ that sell wine nearby were filled with Australian wine, and much cheaper than in Australia. Also we saw some wins we hadn't seen on sale for a very long time - or maybe we go to the wrong liquor stores! We settled on a Spanish sparkling Cava from Codorniu. Not bad, but quite different from Champagnes and Proseccos.

We settled on the
Cinnamon, an Indian & Bengali restaurant. For simplicity, we chose a set menu for dinner which included: Poppadoms & chutneys, Cinnamon grill special (3 different meats with salad), Lamb Rangally Machli (a mild but spicy lamb curry with a creamy sauce topping), Chicken Tikka Masala (cooked in exotic cream & tomato sauce and different to what we’ve had before), Bombay aloo (a mild potato curry), all Served with pilau rice & naan bread, and of course pickles, chutney, raita and onion salad. Suffice it to say that the food and service was excellent, including ice bucket for the wine. And it was cheap for what we got - 25 pounds for us both (less than $40). We were so stuffed when we left we couldn't understand how two ordinary people could eat so much food at one sitting. Short walk, staggered upstairs, went to bed, the end.
