Day 18 - Part 2 - Leidschendam, Wilsveen, Zandvoot

Instead of heading straight back south to Zoetemeer, we took a detour via Zandvoot which is a similar beach to Scheveningen, but more low key. Only after we get back do I find out there’s a 'naturist' beach. However, given that the temperature was about 14c and the wind was howling off the North Sea, there may have been few ‘naturists’ around. As you can see in the pic, not a lot of people taking in the sunshine while we were there – think it picks up a bit in summer.

Anyway Frances has her SECOND 'broodje haring' roll while I had some very nice battered prawns and salad thank you, both from the Kroon take-away stand.

On the way back we also detoured by a group of 3 old operational windmills between Leidschendam and Wilsveen. The drive there was pleasant, along a narrow raised road and canal, with the surrounding land metres below. Still can’t get used to there being so much water above the level of the surrounding land.

I imagined that with so much open water the atmosphere would be damp or humid, but perhaps because of the almost constant wind, the air is quite dry. In fact because it hasn’t rained for a while and the trees are flowering for spring, there is a lot of dust in the air which makes it uncomfortable sometimes, especially when we’re cycling.
